George Nakashima Furniture

George Nakashima was a Japanese-American woodworker and furniture maker who is known for his unique, organic designs and his use of live-edge wood. Born in 1905 in Spokane, Washington, Nakashima was educated in Japan and the United States, where he studied architecture and design at the University of Washington. He later apprenticed with the famous Japanese architect Antonin Raymond, and his work was heavily influenced by Japanese and American craftsmanship traditions.

Nakashima's furniture is characterized by its natural, organic forms and its use of live-edge wood, which he believed conveyed the unique spirit and character of each tree. He often used wide, sweeping curves and asymmetrical shapes in his designs, and he favored the use of natural wood finishes that enhanced the wood's natural beauty. Nakashima's work is highly prized by collectors and furniture enthusiasts, and he is considered one of the most important and influential furniture designers of the 20th century.
